  • About the Course
  • The FunSim Fundamental Simulation Instructional Methods course is a fast paced introductory level in-person 1.5 -day course providing a didactic and simulation-based introduction to principles of simulation-based healthcare education for healthcare professionals. 

    Hawai‘i Pacific Health designates this activity for a maximum of 8.75 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits TM for physicians.  Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
    Hawai‘i Pacific Health designates this activity for 8.75 contact hours for nurses. Nurses should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

    Schedule
    Day 1:  9a - 4p 
    Day 2:  9a - 12p

    The FunSim course size is limited to 12 participants, assuring a high faculty to learner ratio.
    The course is designed to provide healthcare educators a hands-on experience through participatory prototype educational sessions. Participants experience simulation sessions as participants, observers, and evaluators. Advanced educational technology, is utilized throughout the program.  This course has been awarded a research grant from the Society for Simulation in Healthcare.

    • Orientation to simulation Logistics and operations – How to get things done
    • Introductory Instructional Design for Simulation – Turning technology in to teaching and matching technology to learning objectives.
    • How orientation  sets the stage for a safe learning environment.
    • Facilitation and Debriefing Skills – How to become an expert facilitator – practice!
    • Formative vs. Summative Assessment
    • Student Centered Learning
    • Safe Learning Environment
    • Measuring the Success of a Scenario
    Course Goals
    • Gain fundamental knowledge and skill in the design and execution of simulation-based activities in medical education. 
    • Improve understanding of the differences between simulation-based and traditional teaching methods
    Objectives
    • Participants will construct and test a simple simulation based education sessions.
    • Introduction to concepts of facilitation and practice facilitation techniques.
    • Participants complete student assessment during a simulation based educational event and analyze differences in learner assessment methods. 
    • Introduction to concepts of debriefing and practice debriefing techniques.
