  • About the Course
  • A summer selective course for JABSOM and U.S. Medical students who have completed their 1st year of medical school, or international medical students 4th year and above proficient in English language. SimFACTs is an active-learning, simulation-based course focusing on techniques used in the acute care setting. Learners will be in the SimTiki Simulation Center for 70 contact hours. Content will be covered by small groups participating in scenarios, debriefing, case discussions, and procedure stations. Human patient simulators, partial task trainers, and lecture slides will be used. A self-efficacy survey will be collected pre- and post-course. Students will complete a summative simulation scenario at the end of the course. A limited number of seats are available.

    Goals:
    - Consolidate and apply pre-clinical knowledge and skills for acute care simulated settings
    - Prepare and practice skills required for clinical rotations
    - Increase confidence in knowledge and skills for clinical rotations

    Objectives include:
    - Apply knowledge and content from first year of medical school through experiences in manikin-based scenarios, simulated procedures and case discussions.
    - Recognize red flags when interpreting common acute care diagnostic studies, apply strategies for managing difficult conversations around medical error, death/dying, etc.
    - Learn and practice acute care evaluation and management techniques including: obtaining pertinent history, formulating broad differentials, practicing oral presentations, teamwork skills and emergency procedures (airway management, lumbar puncture, IO needle insertion, E-FAST ultrasound).

    Timeline:
Offered between July 2 and July 27
